Life of Pi!

Hello Everyone!

    Just last weekend, I went to the cinema with my family and watched 'The Life of Pi'. It was a brilliant movie, right down to the actors, plot and the scenery. But I'm writing about it today because of the power of nature that is displayed in the film.

    This is a spoiler alert, but the movie is largely set in the Pacific Ocean, where the main character is set adrift because the boat that was supposed to take him to Canada went down in a storm. His family died with the sinking of that ship, so he is the only one left on a lifeboat with a tiger. It was interesting because the main character "Pi", had to live for days in the ocean with the tiger on the lifeboat. He eventually trained the tiger, and it eventually learned to respect "Pi" and not...kill him. 

    They come across many storms in the ocean, which just shows how humans are absolutely defenceless against nature. He comes across an island next, which is a natural haven during the day. But it becomes a huge digestive system over night. Basically the water on that island turns toxic during the night, so if he tried to drink or swim in that water, he would just dissolve. 

The tiger realized this during the day and ran back to the boat during the evening. Pi didn't realize why the tiger did this, but during the night he realized. So the next morning (Pi slept on a tree during the night) he set off back on the boat. It just shows how animals are so much smarter than humans in a way. They have a natural awareness over terrain which humans will never possess. 

    I'm not sure why I'm writing this, I just found the movie really interesting. I would highly recommend it to anyone who's looking to watch a movie!

Mind Blowing Global Warming Facts

Hello, My fellow Viewers!

        I was just browsing the web earlier today, and I came across some really startling information about global warming. I'll provide the link below this post, but for right now, here is what I found in a nutshell.

- Planet Earth could lose 50% of it's species by 2050 is we keep polluting the way we are currently.
- Around 27,000 species become extinct every single year. That is an alarming amount, and humans are the only ones to blame.
- We are losing about 40 million acres of forest areas every year because of deforestation, only 12% of our forests are in the state in which it originated from.
- In Greenland, 12% of the surface ice melted, which is a record amount! (in 2007)

Moon: An Alternative Energy Source?!

I was just reading an very interesting article about energy we might be able to harness from the moon.

I'll break it down if anyone just wants to read a simple analysis. Basically, when Apollo astronauts return from the moon, they always bring back rocks from the moon's surface. Scientists have concluded that these rocks contain an element called 'Helium-3', which is a stable isotope of helium. The rocks are missing a neutron, which makes it possible for us to perform nuclear fusion. Using nuclear fusion, we can produce mass amounts of clean energy, which is what the earth needs. Sadly, our resources are in space and it takes billions of dollars just to get there.

Nuclear fusion at the moment uses fission reactors, splitting up uranium nuclei to release energy, and this produces heat. This very heat turns water into steam which spins a turbine to make electricity. But this system produces a lot of radioactive waste, which is why scientists need to find an alternative energy source.

Greenland Meltdown!

Hello viewers!

   I'm sure all of you are aware of the Greenland situation already, but for those who aren't, this is the deal. Basically, during the course of this month, Greenland's ice sheets have been melting at an alarming rate. Even scientists have been taken by surprise. They are calling this situation 'unprecedented' which means unique and completely unexpected.

   As you can see, in just 4 days, Greenland has lost much of its ice sheets, even in Summit station, which is Greenland's highest and coldest point. Records do indicate that this event occurs every 150 years. (the last time this meltdown occurred was 1889)

   The meltdown area was from 40% to 97% in the matter of 4 days. Researches say that even though the ice melted extremely fast, the area appears to be freezing again, at a much slower rate. Scientists cannot determine yet if the meltdown is because of global warming, or if it's because of a natural rare event. But even if that cannot be concluded, we should keep global warming in mind. Events like these are huge, even if you don't realise it. We should do everything in our power to keep our planet clean and we should try our best not to pollute.

Bio-hazardous Waste...

Happy Saturday Everyone!

       I decided to post about bio-hazardous waste, since I have been getting some questions about it. The common misconception in today's society is that the general public don't throw out anything that is toxic. But believe me, people do waste toxic materials everyday without even knowing it. For starters, batteries. The mercury in batteries are extremely harmful to the environment. If mercury breaks down into the soil, organisms such as earthworms will consume it, and 1 of 2 things will occur. The earthworm could instantly die, which will lead to a significant loss in the Earth's biosphere, or the earthworm's off-springs will contain bits of the mercury. This will start infecting a lot of organisms through contact, and this will lead to a whole arsenal of horrible situations. 

      There are much more items in households that contain toxic material, such as laptops, pesticides and leftover paint. These common items get thrown out everyday on a large scale, and if they are recycled, then the long term damage could be avoided, (since we are using it again and again without throwing it) but if they are thrown out for good, then the material gets mixed in water, the soil, and many other surfaces. So when you are throwing out anything, check if it is recyclable or not. That small sacrifice of your time could mean the difference between life and death for some organisms.
