Law Of Unintended Consequences!

Sometimes, too much of a good thing also has it's consequences. I want to give you 2 examples of that.

In Australia: A large frog, commonly known as the Giant Neotropical Toad, came from the United States and Brazil. It was brought to Australia because there was a beetle in Australia called the Cane beetle, that was eating all the sugar cane crops in Australia. So the toads were supposed to eat all the beetles and control the problem. The toads did their job, but a little too well. The toads were eating the beetles like there was no tomorrow, and now there are hardly any of those beetles anymore. There were originally 102 toads sent over, now there are over 200 million!!

Canada: In Canada, there is a group called the Canadian Forest Service. Here, they keep forest fires from raging through our forests. But they are forgetting something. Fire is part of the natural eco-system of forests. Because there are no fires now, large amounts of trees are prone to be threatened by pests. Diseases have already started breaking out in forests that could have been prevented by fire. Without fire, the bed of soil keeps growing taller and thicker. So the seeds that are going to grow cannot because the soil is just not right for them. Now, older trees are being threatened by pine beetles. Forests all over British Columbia and Alberta are at risk now because of now forest fires. Isn't that ironic?
